Ele
tocou quase tudos os instrumentos presentes nas músicas: vocal,
guitarras, violão, teclados e percurssão, provando que é um excelente
multi-instrumentista, além de exímio compositor. Detalhe, o disco
é dedicado apenas à sua esposa Kate e a seu filho Sonny Ashcroft.
Mas
vamos saber um pouco da história desta estrela de talento. Como
líder da típica banda inglesa The Verve, Richard Ashcroft apareceu
como um descendente espiritual de ícones do rock & roll, tais
como Mick Jagger e Jim Morrison - bastante carismático e com uma
intensidade quase xamânica, ele adotou e articulou o fervor sonoro
do rock com um poder e eloqüência que não se comparam a qualquer
um de seus contemporâneos.

| Ashcroft
nasceu no dia 11 de setembro de 1971, no bairro suburbano
chamado Wigan, que fica na cidade inglesa de Billinge. Freqüentou
a Uphollannd Comprehensive School junto com seus futuros companheiros
do Verve: Simon Jones, Simon Tong e Peter Salisbury. Aos 11
anos, logo depois de perder seu pai, ele foi influenciado
pelo seu padastro, um membro da antiga e secular ordem dos
Rosicrucianos, que regularmente executavam experiências que
mexem com a mente e as artes da cura. |

Quando
era estudante da Winstanley College, em 1989, Ashcroft co-fundou
o Verve com o baixista Jones, o baterista Salisbury e o guitarrista
Nick McCabe; cantando para o selo Hut da Virgin, para garantir
o lançamento de um single em 1992 chamado "All in the Mind". Com
esse trabalho, a banda recebeu vários elogios, sendo que naquela
época Ashcroft ganhou um apelido nada agradável, "Mad Richard",
ou Maluco Richard, que foi dado pela imprensa inglesa.
Apesar
do apelo crítico da banda, o Verve geralmente estava a mercê das
forças que estavam fora de seu controle. Durante um show no festival
Lollapalooza, que ajudou no lançamento de seu LP A Storm in Heaven,
em 1993, Ashcroft foi hospitalizado após ter sofrido uma forte
desidratação. Depois de alguns meses a banda entrou numa longa
batalha judicial com o selo American, que resultou na mudança
oficial do nome "The Verve".

Em 1995, eles gravaram, sob a influência da explosão da droga
ecstasy, A Northern Soul, que separou a banda definitivamente,
embora Ashcroft já tivesse mudado o estilo há algumas semanas.
O The Verve reformado conquistou sucesso internacional com
o célebre disco Urban Hymns de 1997, que reunia uma série
de hits, incluindo "Bittersweet Symphony," "The Drugs Don't
Work" e "Lucky Man". Porém, algumas brigas judiciais concederam
100% dos direitos da música "Bittersweet Symphony" à ABKCO
Music, pois a música foi feita baseada num trabalho do Rolling
Stones. Com isso, os atritos entre Ashcroft e McCabe aumentaram
e o guitarrista deixou a banda após o final de uma turnê.
O The Verve novamente havia se dissolvido e dessa vez foi
para melhor. |

O
lançamento solo de Ashcroft, Alone with Everybody, saiu em meados
de 2000. Quase no final de 2000, Ashcroft já comemorava o sucesso
de seu trabalho solo que foi um estouro de vendas, antes da turnê
americana. Porém, dois dias antes de chegar em Chicago, a turnê
inteira foi cancelada devido à uma enfermidade de Ashcroft, que
os especuladores logo atribuíram ao seu antigo comportamento como
usuário de drogas, desde a época da banda The Verve. Esses rumores
se espalharam rapidamente e as datas da turnê americana foram
remarcadas para janeiro de 2001.
